What Size Basketballs Should I Buy?
Whether you are buying a basketball for yourself or as a gift, it’s important to buy the correct size ball. Basketballs come in 3 main sizes – 5, 6 and 7. Brands are slowly introducing a size 4 ball but this isn’t widely available at this time.
For now the mains sizes will always be size 5, 6 and 7. If you play basketball, I would recommend buying the size of ball that you are going to use in matches. If you are buying as a gift, ask the players parent or coach for guidance on size required. Don’t jump in and buy a size 7 ball for a player aged 12 years old. Their hands are likely to be too small to effectively pass and shoot the ball consistently. This could cause the player to become disillusioned with the game. So, to encourage development of the player aim to buy the correct size that reflects their age.
|Basketball Size||Age Band of Player||Age of Player||Ball Circumference|
|Size 7||Men's - 14+||Ages 15 year plus||29.5"|
|Size 6||Women's - 14+||Ages 15 year plus||28.5"|
|Size 6||Youth - 12 to 14||Ages 12, 13 and 14||28.5"|
|Size 5||Kids - 7 to 11||Ages 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11.||27.5"|
In other words, size 5 basketballs are for children aged 7 to 11 years. This includes ages 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11. This age range may change over the next year as the size 4 becomes more common. Similarly a size 6 basketball is for youth players aged 12, 13 and 14 years. After that a girl then continues to use the size 6 basketball and is the ball size for women’s basketball. Finally a size 7 basketball is suitable for players aged 15 years and above.
When I Buy A Basketball Will It Be Inflated On Arrival?
When you buy a basketball online, it will in most cases arrive deflated. Therefore, you will need to inflate the ball with a ball pump to get ready for use. Most importantly, it is essential you lubrictae the needle prior to inserting into the valve of the ball. For instance, add a small droplet of glycerine on the mouth of the valve before inserting the needle. This will ensure the needle is fully lubricated, as it enters the valve and certainly, makes it less likely any damage will occur.
